Bio:

Lynn Fraser brings the depth of twenty two years experience teaching meditation. She specializes in holding a safe, trusted space for healing trauma in her private online sessions. Lynn lives near family, ocean and forest in Nova Scotia Canada.

She is a senior teacher in the Himalayan Yoga Meditation tradition; and an experienced Facilitator of Scott Kiloby’s Living Inquiries.

‘Fast forward 25 years from when I first learned meditation in the early nineties. I see and love myself. I am authentic and connect deeply. My body is relaxed and a known space. Trauma is largely healed and resolved. I am mostly free of reactivity and I have skills to work with thoughts and sensation. I know from experience I can be with whatever is arising in this space and time. I feel, at 66, that I am now an emotionally mature adult.’

‘Lynn has experienced a profound recognition of present moment awareness and embodies it naturally.  That’s the kind of teacher anyone would want, for if one’s teacher does not have the direct experience of what is being taught, true transformation just cannot happen.’ Scott Kiloby

Bio:

“In her practice, Kelly McDaniel, LPC, NCC, CSAT, author and psychotherapist, offers Individual Intensives for women living with the generational legacy of Mother Hunger. Kelly works carefully and confidentially with clients as they navigate the tender, primitive wound that comes from an early broken heart.

Kelly is writing a new book about Mother Hunger®. to be published by Hay House in 2021. Expanding her concept of Mother Hunger from Ready to Heal (McDaniel, 2008), she has developed a treatment process to soothe the complex betrayal trauma that lies beneath maladaptive eating habits and what she calls Intimacy Intolerance.

Kelly is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) since 2005 and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). Her background includes a Master’s Degree in English Literature from Georgetown University in Washington, DC and a Master’s Degree in Counseling from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX.

Additional training includes Sue Johnson’s ‘Emotionally Focused Therapy’, Pia Mellody’s ‘PIT model’, EMDR ‘Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing’ as well as Family Constellation work.

In 2008, Gentle Path Press published McDaniel’s first book Ready to Heal written for women healing from addictive love and sex. Ready to Heal outlines the inescapable impasse that occurs for women programmed for love but pathologized for desire.

In 2012, McDaniel collaborated with 9 other clinicians to write and publish Making Advances: A Comprehensive Guide for the Treatment of Female Love and Sex Addicts. At conferences and workshops, Kelly speaks and teaches about the cultural legacy for women that creates Mother Hunger, Addiction and Heartbreak.”

Join us as we discuss:

  • her role as an educator, speaker, advocate of trauma-informed approaches
  • her personal journey as an at-risk youth and trauma survivor
  • defining resilience
  • self-care importance
  • her role as an adoptive mother
  • and more!

Bio:

“As the Southern California community facilitator for ACEs Connection and independent consultant, Lara brings her deep understanding of the importance of schools as community drivers for change. Lara is an experienced educator and consultant who speaks nationally on implementing trauma-informed practices in schools and building holistic, trauma-responsive systems. Lara brings over two decades of experience at the local, state and national level, including developing programs for integrating trauma-informed practices into community schools in Los Angeles. She worked for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as the state homeless coordinator, and practiced her first love,  teaching ‘at-risk’ youth. Lara has a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MPA from The Evergreen State College. As an example of her understanding of the micro and the macro, Lara’s experience ranges from supporting individual teachers to designing a trauma-informed schools pilot implemented in 20 schools across the country. Lara has worked both as a teacher and administrator putting the science of building resilience into practice. For Lara, who is a trauma survivor and was herself an ‘at-risk’ youth, this work is deeply personal. She understands what schools can and should look like to benefit ALL children. As the mother of two adopted sons, she understands the effects of developmental trauma and what it takes to overcome it. Born in the Midwest, she lived for over a decade in the Pacific Northwest, and is now a transplant to Southern California, where she lives with her husband and two boys. The beach is her happy place.”

Sobriety Celebration

Sobriety Celebration

Tonight’s podcast episode was the result of an impromptu Facebook Live interview with my mom, better know as GJ for Grandma Joann, in celebration of her reaching the 6 month milestone of sobriety. The beast of her alcoholism has been something we have all battled in our family . . . from our co-addictive relationships as husband and children to my mom’s struggles with vodka, pills, and depression.

Part of my healing journey has been working through the traumatic events experienced as a result of this family affliction. The horrors of an attempted stabbing (she tried to kill my dad with a butcher knife), attempted drownings (of four-year-old me with my one-year-old sister beside me in the bathtub), incarceration (due to stabbing incident), suicidal ideation, countless bouts with detox resulting in hospitalization, as well as the humiliation dumped upon us children in her moments of rage and resentment, left me seeking a mother I thought I’d never have.

When sober, oh what an angel on earth she is. Truly. The kindest, sweetest, funniest lady around. She was brilliant at her job and known for her hilarious jokes. Wherever we go, someone is stopping us to hug on my mom.

However, when vodka hit her system and she was behind the closed doors of our little apartment on the outskirts of Cincinnati, a monster appeared.

In July, 2019, after receiving a call from my younger sister, as I stood atop a mountain in Estes Park, Colorado, I finally decided I’d had enough. I could no longer be the one to swoop in and clean up the mess. I was going to have to walk away. Turn my back on my then 83-year-old mother and let her flail alone. She would have to be the one to save herself.

Truly one of the most difficult decisions I had ever made. But, it had to be done.

And she did it! She started seeing two counselors. She stopped drinking. And she finally started mending her broken pieces and talking about her own ACEs (adverse childhood experiences). I didn’t speak to her for three months. Neither did my sister. Nor any of her seven grandchildren. We all left her alone to face and slay her own demons.

I am beyond proud of her for conquering her biggest fear. And learning to live life beyond the bottle.

We laugh. We talk. We sing. We go on shopping dates. Today I had her try sushi for the first time in her life at my favorite Asian bistro. She loved it!

All those precious gifts I craved as a little girl. I have been gifted with them at fifty-three.

I love you, Mom.
