Sobriety Celebration

Sobriety Celebration

Tonight’s podcast episode was the result of an impromptu Facebook Live interview with my mom, better know as GJ for Grandma Joann, in celebration of her reaching the 6 month milestone of sobriety. The beast of her alcoholism has been something we have all battled in our family . . . from our co-addictive relationships as husband and children to my mom’s struggles with vodka, pills, and depression.

Part of my healing journey has been working through the traumatic events experienced as a result of this family affliction. The horrors of an attempted stabbing (she tried to kill my dad with a butcher knife), attempted drownings (of four-year-old me with my one-year-old sister beside me in the bathtub), incarceration (due to stabbing incident), suicidal ideation, countless bouts with detox resulting in hospitalization, as well as the humiliation dumped upon us children in her moments of rage and resentment, left me seeking a mother I thought I’d never have.

When sober, oh what an angel on earth she is. Truly. The kindest, sweetest, funniest lady around. She was brilliant at her job and known for her hilarious jokes. Wherever we go, someone is stopping us to hug on my mom.

However, when vodka hit her system and she was behind the closed doors of our little apartment on the outskirts of Cincinnati, a monster appeared.

In July, 2019, after receiving a call from my younger sister, as I stood atop a mountain in Estes Park, Colorado, I finally decided I’d had enough. I could no longer be the one to swoop in and clean up the mess. I was going to have to walk away. Turn my back on my then 83-year-old mother and let her flail alone. She would have to be the one to save herself.

Truly one of the most difficult decisions I had ever made. But, it had to be done.

And she did it! She started seeing two counselors. She stopped drinking. And she finally started mending her broken pieces and talking about her own ACEs (adverse childhood experiences). I didn’t speak to her for three months. Neither did my sister. Nor any of her seven grandchildren. We all left her alone to face and slay her own demons.

I am beyond proud of her for conquering her biggest fear. And learning to live life beyond the bottle.

We laugh. We talk. We sing. We go on shopping dates. Today I had her try sushi for the first time in her life at my favorite Asian bistro. She loved it!

All those precious gifts I craved as a little girl. I have been gifted with them at fifty-three.

I love you, Mom.

Bio:

Dr. Kristina Brinkerhoff,  a consultant, keynote speaker, presenter and trainer, leverages over 20 years of experience as a teacher, principal, superintendent and adoptive mom of five foster children, to help educators gain an understanding of the effects Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and the importance of trauma informed practice in schools. Her work focuses on the direct impact ACEs have on a child’s ability to self-regulate and successfully function in the classroom and school setting, and what schools can do to help students build self-regulation skills and resilience strategies. Participants will gain an understanding of specific strategies designed to help school educators navigate how to address the impact of ACEs, recognize student needs, establish caring and responsive trauma informed classroom and school expectations, and respond to difficult behaviors with compassion and self-control.”

What Participants Are Saying!!

“Really great info, one of the best PD sessions I’ve ever attended!”

“The presentation and materials were excellent!”

“This was the best session I have ever attended!”

“Love your personal connections !”

“Thank you for getting the mind thinking!”

“Thank you, this was an awesome use of my time!”

“Great charisma as a presenter!”

“It was awesome, thanks for everything!”

“Excellent.  I wish I knew this at the beginning of my career and know now as I am at retirement.”

“Mrs. Brinkerhoff is confident, poised, and well-versed when it comes to delivering ACE strategy training to teaching/educational staff. She is able to build quick rapport with the staff which then allows her to work directly with them when faced with a challenging scenario.”   Valerie Uhlorn, Principal Amity Elementary

“Dr. Brinkerhoff presented to our K-5 administrative group about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE). I was so impressed with her presentation that I asked if she would be willing to come and speak with my staff before the school year had started. This was an area, that my staff was not super familiar with and I felt that bringing her in as an outside source would give a different perspective. She spent half the day with us and really spoke to the depths of childhood trauma and the disruption to the learning environment. The understanding that my staff had after her presentation allowed us to start our year off with compassion and patience for those kids in need. She has the experience and the gift to present with influence and impact for our educators. ”  Tony Bonucelli, Principal, Moscow Charter School

“Dr. Brinkerhoff connected her research to personal stories from her days teaching and being an Elementary Principal. Her on-the-ground experience, warm personality, and sense of humor allowed her to relate well to her audience of over 100 administrators.  In my eight years of attending the IASA annual conference, Dr. Brinkerhoff was by far the best keynote speaker we have had at the final IAESP session. In fact, once she was finished, a fellow administrator immediately booked her to present at a fall back-to-school training for their charter school staff. ”  Dr. Kendra McMillan, Ph.D, Lena Wittmoore Elementary

Bio:

“Shenandoah Chefalo’s early childhood and subsequent placement into foster care has given her a personal insight into the trauma that children in our nation experience every day. As an author, coach, and nationally-recognized speaker, Shen advocates for foster children everywhere she goes. She also encourages and challenges those in power on state and federal levels, as well as those providing care, to provide the best care possible for these children. With a lengthy career as a paralegal and director of a law firm, Shen has also seen the legal side of children’s care and how much more trauma may be experienced as a child’s case proceeds through the court system.

Shen has been the owner and chief training advocate of two firms in Michigan offering business and life coaching, consultation, and training across the United States. She has consulted with both private and public sector clients providing group and one-on-one training and coaching, workshops, webinars, and keynote speeches. Shen is particularly adept at helping clients identify and address issues, as well as achieve goals, specifically related to the topics of trauma and adversity.

In addition to her work, Shen has authored three books: Setting Your Vision and Defining Your Goals (2013), Garbage Bag Suitcase (2016), and Hiking for Stillness: Healing Trauma One Step at a Time, expected to be published in 2019.
